Frequently Asked Questions About Hardwood Flooring
Can I Install Hardwood Flooring In Any Room?
Hardwood Flooring can be installed in any room of your home. However, don’t recommend it in areas of high humidity like bathrooms, basements, and areas where there is a probability of it getting wet. A suitable sub-flooring is necessary for proper installation, which prevents moisture from coming up from below the hardwood flooring when it is installed.
What Is Wide Plank Flooring?
Wide Plank refers to the widths of each flooring piece that are wider than the standard 2 1/2” – 5” widths that make up the majority of the wood flooring market. Narrow widths are referred to as strip flooring. Wide plank gives the look of traditional period flooring that was common in the Colonial times when large timber was common, and the wider boards produced from those trees were used to make flooring.
Engineered vs Solid Wood Flooring; What Is Right For Me?
Engineered wood flooring is manufactured where a substrate is used and a veneer of wood is applied over the substrate. The main advantage is stability, which means less chance of cupping. A disadvantage is that if it is scratched below the surface of the veneer, it cannot be sanded and refinished. Solid wood flooring provides the ability for several sanding and refinishing options over the life of the floor. It isn’t recommended for installation in damp or moist areas due to its ability to cup.
Do I Really Need To Let My Flooring Acclimate?
The answer is yes, and the reason being is that all solid wood is hygroscopic, which means that it will constantly adjust to the relative humidity of its surroundings. Prior to installation, you will want your material to adjust to the area it will be installed in. During the winter your home has lower relative humidity than in summer, so the wood will need roughly a week to adjust to those conditions. It is recommended for all seasons, to allow it to acclimate to the relative humidity of your home.
How Long After I Place My Order Does It Usually Take To Be Ready?
Bailey Wood Products manufactures flooring to our customer’s specific orders. We do not keep a stock of finished flooring on hand. Depending on our order file, when you order we typically turn orders around in 2 weeks. For items that are more custom, that time frame could take longer based on the quantity you are looking for or based on the availability of that material at that time. We can advise you of the time frame when we prepare your quote.
Can I Install Hardwood Flooring Over Concrete or Radiant Heating?
We do not recommend installing hardwood flooring directly over concrete. Concrete holds moisture, and that will cause the flooring to cup. A barrier must be installed between the concrete and the flooring to prevent cupping if you plan to install hardwood flooring over it. Please contact us for more information about preparation, if you are considering doing this.
Radiant floor heat is popular in modern construction, and hardwood flooring can be installed over it. Additional steps are required in the installation process, which we can advise you on. We highly recommend using quarter sawn lumber for the radiant heat applications due to the greater stability of the flooring planks, and also staying with planks that are in the 3”-5” width range.
