New Sander, Old Sander…& Amazing Curly Redwood

Bailey Wood Products is in the process of adding a new machine to our shop.  New to our shop is a 52” wide Double Sanding Head Timesaver Wide Belt Sander.  We were fortunate to find this older machine with low hours of use, in great condition, several months ago.  We have been adding some electrical panels and a transformer to allow us to run this beast of a machine.  We expect to have it in operation very soon.  In the past, we were limited to a maximum width of 36” with our SCM Sandya 1 Wide belt sander.  Now we can do a full sheet of plywood or conference table top in full width.  The time it is going to save us will be well worth all of the work it will take to get it hooked up and running.

When we have completed that project, our 36” SCM Sandya 1S sander is looking for a new home.  It is a single head machine, in good working condition.  It is wired for 3 Phase electrical supply.  If you have interest in it, or know someone who does, please pass this information along.  You will be able to take a look at it during our Fall Woodworker’s Fair on October 19th.  Please contact Jeff with any inquiries, or requests for information about the sander.

Last weekend we exhibited in Blue Mountain Lake, NY, for the Rustic Furniture Show.  We had a great time meeting some new people and seeing some of the talented work created by those craftsmen.  We had a smaller showing of items at this event, but very similar to what we have to offer at our Woodworker’s Fair coming upon October 19th.  For information on the fair, please see our website with the listing of the exhibitors, vendors and demonstrations you will find at this year’s fair.

At the Blue Mountain show, we displayed some very unique pieces that we have been fortunate to come across.  For sale at Bailey’s are 4 cuts from a reclaimed river log of Curly Redwood from Oregon.  Each piece has very tight growth rings and some exceptional curl.  They are sawn at 3” thickness.  One of the pieces is shown below.  They all have been kiln dried, and are ready to be turned into unique pieces of wood art.  We estimate that the tree was harvested in the early 1900’s.  Being exceptionally rot resistant gives Redwood good longevity.  An old growth piece, the tree could be several hundred years old.  The figure in all of the pieces is truly spectacular, and given some time and care while finishing this wood with a good durable finish, will ensure that it lasts for many generations.
