Wilmer C. George, of Crafts by George started doing Intarsia Woodworking as a way of keeping himself occupied after he retired from the Army in 2002. His first attempt at Intarsia resulted in a teddy bear for his granddaughter. This was soon followed by a tree frog for his grandson. After those successes, Wilmer started trying other patterns.
As time went by, Wilmer began researching Intarsia woodworking online; the first patterns were free ones that he was able to print for his own use. Several years ago, he traveled to Tennessee for an open house at the Judy Gail Roberts Studio, which is where he currently gets most of his patterns.
He does not paint the wood, he only uses different wood species for color shading. Some are imported woods, while other are local wood species. Intarsia is a woodworking technique that uses different shapes, sizes, and species of wood fitted together like a puzzle to create a picture or object with an illusion of depth or texture.
Wilmer enjoys doing craft shows and meeting people, but has no intention of turning his hobby into a full time business. He and a family member, who is a potter, do shows around our area and as far south as North Carolina.
Crafts by George will be bringing Christmas ornaments, earrings, wall decor such as wizzards, angels, eagles, a sail boat and more, to the 6th Annual Fall Woodworker’s Fair .
