Delano Schucker of Hidden Treasures Woodworking is a veteran of the Fall Woodworker’s Fair. A vendor since the very first Fall Fair six years ago, he has been turning wood since the mid 1980’s. He turns bowls, plates, cups, and bowls with lids on the lathe. He likes to use unusual grained woods, or woods with unusual colors or shapes. Burls are also a favorite of his.
The son-in-law of Lester Bailey, one of the original owners of Bailey Wood Products, Delano started out making plank benches at Lester’s urging. At one time, Lester had a customer that made benches; but, when that man passed away, people began asking him to have benches made. In the mid 80’s, Delano started to make various sized benches and had good success selling them. At that time, he also decided to try his hand at the lathe making bowls and plates. Since he retired 10 years ago, he has been spending his free time turning wood. Delano uses wood that he purchases from his son Jeff Schucker, the current owner of Bailey Wood Products. He also uses wood from local trees that he cuts into blanks for his turning projects.
While he does not teach wood-turning in any formal capacity, Delano enjoys helping people get started using the lathe and giving them a helping hand with their projects. When asked his thoughts about the craft of woodworking, he says that he finds it to be a very relaxing hobby and would recommend taking up turning to others.
Bailey Wood Products sells a wide range of domestic and exotic hardwood lumber that lends itself well to turning and joining. The workability and natural finish of wood compliments many other crafts such as the fiber arts, jewelry making, and ceramics.
Weavers, Spinners, and Knitters have used wood for centuries for looms, shuttles, drop spindles, spinning wheels, needles and hooks. While many modern materials are currently available to crafts people, wood remains a constant favorite, not only for its durability, but its tactile warmth.
